 Monticello

The Madison Square "Monticello collection is largely based on furniture made in the "joinery," or woodworking shop, at Monticello, Thomas Jefferson's extraordinary residence in Charlottesville, Virginia. Monticello's furnishings came from Virginia, Philadelphia, New York, and Paris. The man most closely associated with furniture making was the talented John Hemings, a slave who also helped to construct the house. Skillfully yet simply made, elegant, even cosmopolitan in concept, this remarkable body of furniture reflects the unique design sense of Thomas Jefferson, and John Hemings. The dining room collection made by Madison Square is based on or inspired by furnishing found in the house and crafted out of mahogany.
